Key features
Real-time status monitoring: The BMS constantly monitors battery health, voltage, and remaining power. This data is transmitted to the user’s remote controller, providing an accurate calculation of the remaining flight time.
Automatic discharge function: To prevent cell swelling and prolong battery lifespan, the battery will automatically discharge to a safer storage voltage after a period of inactivity. For example, batteries for many models will discharge to 60% after 9 or 10 days of being idle.
Charging protection: The intelligent system prevents both overcharging and over-discharging, automatically stopping charging once the battery is full. It also prevents charging when the battery is too hot or cold.
Stable power output: The system ensures a stable and reliable energy output during flight, which helps with smooth flight performance.
Return-to-home trigger: If the battery level drops low enough to affect a safe return, the BMS can automatically trigger the drone’s “Return to Home” function.
Optimized charging: When using a multi-battery charging hub, the intelligent system will often charge the battery with the most power first, or manage the charging sequence for optimal efficiency. Some models can also use the power accumulation function to consolidate power into a single battery.
Factors affecting battery choice
Compatibility: DJI Intelligent Flight Batteries are specific to different drone models. You must purchase the correct battery for your drone.
Flight time vs. weight: For some drone models, such as the Mini series, DJI offers both a standard Intelligent Flight Battery and a larger, heavier Intelligent Flight Battery Plus.
Standard battery: Offers a good flight time while keeping the drone under 249 grams in weight, which can save pilots from needing to register their aircraft in many regions.
Battery Plus: Provides a longer flight time, but increases the drone’s weight above the 249-gram threshold, potentially requiring registration.
Aftermarket alternatives: While third-party batteries are available at a lower cost, they often lack the integrated intelligent features and communication with the drone. Using non-OEM batteries may also void your warranty.
